Found in several places around the world from Australia, Brazil, Russia and China, topaz in its natural state is usually colourless. Blue and pink topaz do occur naturally but are extremely rare. In order to obtain the wide range of colours we see today, stones are treated with heat and chemicals. Due to this process Topaz is available in all colours of the rainbow including pink, blue and yellow. Its striking colours combined with its beauty, durability and affordability makes topaz jewellery ideal for all occasions.
Mystic topaz belongs to the same family group as blue topaz and is one of this centuries most beautiful new gemstones. It has grown in popularity since 2003 when it was exhibited at the world largest gem show in Arizona. Its popularity is due to the striking array of vibrant colours and the versatility as it looks beautiful when set in gold and white gold. Although it is a relatively new type of enhanced gemstone, its unique multi coloured brilliance and affordability are making it one of the most sought after gems today.
As I mentioned earlier, mystic topaz does not occur naturally. To create the beautiful stone, natural colourless topaz is treated with a thin coating of titanium which is applied to the underside of the stone. It is the application of this coating that creates the stunning rainbow of colours. This striking iridescent effect makes mystic topaz the perfect choice for unique rings and jewellery. It lends itself to a wide range of cuts and styles and is often set alongside diamonds in both yellow and white gold.< colours it needs specialist care and maintenance. As the treatment is applied to the underside of the stone, the surface of the stone is actually very resistant to scratches or damage undertaken through everyday wear. If cared for correctly the coating will last the lifetime of the jewellery. As always we would recommend that you remove your mystic topaz jewellery when undertaking any heavy work to ensure it does not get accidentally knocked or bumped and always ensure it does not come into contact with perfume or cleaning products. The best way to clean the jewellery would be with a mild soap and water solution on a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cloths or brushes as they could scratch away the coating which will influence the stones appearance. It is also advisable not to use steam or ultra sonic cleaners found in jewellery stores.
I hope that this article goes some way to explain the properties of mystic topaz and how best to care for your precious jewellery.
